John Schofield insists the club comes first.

The Gills assistant manager has been kept on the coaching staff by interim manager Peter Taylor.

And Schofield is happy to help the new man towards getting the job permanently.

Schofield, 48, who was brought into Gills by previous boss Martin Allen, said: “It is never nice when anyone loses their job but obviously in football these things happen, certainly when you are friends as well, but we are here to do a job.

“We are employed by Gillingham FC and it’s our job to do the best we can for the football club.

“Peter has come in and put our mind at rest with how he wants to work and the way he wants to do things.

“We are here to take the club forward and continue to take it forward.”

Schofield took training on Monday, prior to Taylor’s arrival a day later.

He is no stranger to the current situation, with the former Lincoln City manager having taken over Cheltenham Town on a caretaker capacity in the wake of Allen’s exit there.

Goalkeeping coach Carl Muggleton is also staying on the coaching staff.

“We just have to get behind Peter now,” said Allen’s former number two at Notts County.

“We will give our best, work hard for Peter and look forward to what’s going to come.

“The manager will put his stamp on the team and we will help the manager and give him our full support.”
