DARREN BYFIELD’S penalty strike against Swansea on Saturday took him one step closer to achieving his 15-goal target.
That was the figure manager Ronnie Jepson asked Byfield to get by the end of the season following the striker’s return to the squad.
Byfield’s brace on Tuesday against Brentford and the winner on Saturday made it three goals in two games for the striker.
After Jepson saw Byfield grab his 11th goal on Saturday which gave Gillingham a 1-0 win over Swansea, he admitted he may have to raise his earlier expectations.
"He’s on 11 goals now and I asked Darren if he can get me another five and finish on 15 at the end of the season," said Jepson. "If he scores again next week I might just have to put the total up a touch."
Byfield, who has had his season plagued by injury, suspensions and constant speculation linking him with a move to Millwall, is out of contract at the end of the season and looks set for a move back into the Championship.
