Season ticket shock for Gills fans

STUNNED Gillingham supporters are reeling from the shock of big all round increases in season ticket prices.

Fans in the Rainham End, which traditionally accommodates Gillingham's die-hard supporters, face a price hike of almost 20 per cent next season with the cost going up from £320 to £383. The cost of a season ticket on the Gillingham End terrace rises from £275 to £340 while senior citizens have been hit with a £54 increase from £201 to £255.

The increases were announced at Saturday's final home game of the season against Manchester City. Mike Keskeys, vice-chairman of the Gills Independent Supporters' Club, said: "The price rises are excessive but in the present crisis caused by the collapse of ITV Digital not unexpected or unjustified.

"But judging by the mood of many season ticket holders I spoke to on Saturday they are having second thoughts about renewing. I believe that Paul Scally has over-egged the pudding.

"While I believe it's imperative that the club stands on its own feet financially, there are a lot of Gills fans on a limited incomes and will not be able to afford these increases. There is a risk now that Gillingham could price themselves out of the market."

Writing Saturday's programme, club chairman Paul Scally said: "I would urge supporters to buy not just an annual season ticket but a two-year ticket, either up front or by the new 10 monthly payment plan we have developed with Zebra Finance.

"We have now instigated a different policy on away ticket allocation and in future 80 per cent of away allocation received will go to season ticket holders and 20 per cent to Priestfield Club members.

"Those supporters who help us now and buy and two-year ticket will not be charged any extra on the second year if we achieve our aims and join Manchester City in the Premier League."
