Second half barrage has Wings flying high

THREE second-half goals lifted Welling up to second place in Conference South on Tuesday night.

The Wings were frustrated by a goalless first 45 minutes but came to the party in the second half to boost their play-off chances.

Although Danny Kedwell twice went close, it was Bognor who created the better chances in the first half. The closest they came to opening the score was on 39 minutes when a right-wing corner fell to Stuart Tuck, whose left-foot drive took two deflections before hitting the upright.

Welling went ahead on 55 minutes when Jamie Day's teasing free-kick was headed in by Steve Perkins for his first goal of the season.

Day then saw his right-foot drive tipped over by keeper Craig Stoner as Welling started to turn the screw, although their supremacy was not confirmed until two goals in the final eight minutes.

First, Matt Bodkin got to the byline before pulling the ball back for Kedwell to drill home his 15th goal of the season.

Then, with four minutes left, Kedwell's left-foot shot was turned in by Martin Carthy for his third goal in as many games.

Welling, who trail leaders Histon by four points, are at home for the third time in eight days when big-spending Newport are the visitors in Conference South on Saturday.

Welling: Turner, Goodfellow (Moore 87), Solomon, Perkins, Boateng (Harper 46), Lewis, Bodkin, Kedwell, Stadhart (Green 90), Carthy, Day.
Subs not used: Hyde, Sam.
Attendance: 501.
