Former Margate boss Robin Trott says he is shocked by the timing of his departure from Hartsdown Park but claimed he was pushed before he jumped.

The Gate player-boss was relieved of his duties on Wednesday with his side languishing in the middle of the Ryman Premier Division table, albeit with a slim chance of claiming the fifth spot which would earn a place in the promotion play-offs.

A club statement said the board had decided not to renew Trott's contract after this season and opted to replace him before the end of his current deal after two years at the helm.

Trott's assistant Steve McKimm will take over for the final two games of the season, starting with the home east Kent derby with struggling Folkestone Invicta on Saturday.

Trott said: "It did come as a surprise to be honest. The team are only three points off the play-offs so the timing is quite concerning."

But he revealed: "I had made the decision a couple of weeks ago that I was going to walk away at the end of the season.

"I kept it quiet and didn't tell the board but I guess they have got wind of it somehow and decided to act first to save face."

He admitted: "It has been a tough year but I have done everything I could. I have done my best. It has come as a shock to me.

"I said at the start of the season that to get to the play-offs would be fantastic this season and to be fair the club have given me the players when we needed them, but the purse is only so deep.

"It is disappointing and the timing is very weird but I wish the club well. I will keep an eye out for the results and I want them to get into the play-offs and get promoted."

He added: "I'd like to thank the club for giving me the chance. I have had two good years here. It has been an eye-opener and the club is looking good for the future. I think it will look good on my CV."

As for his own future, the 33-year-old said he would look at all his options - be they playing or managing - over the summer.

The former Gillingham, Gravesend and Stevenage centre back said: "I will see how it goes. I am sure it won't be too quiet. I will have a look at my options and take it from there."
