Gillingham manager Mark Stimson admits his chances of making a deadline day signing are “very slim”.
The Gills boss has recently boosted his transfer kitty with the loan departure of Andrew Crofts but it may not be enough to make a quality signing.
Stimson met with Gillingham chairman Paul Scally after Tuesday night’s game with Rochdale ahead of the closing of the transfer window on Thursday. It will not reopen again until January.
Asked of his chances of making any signings, Stimson said: “It’s a very slim chance. I will always try but it’s about finances.
“We’ve released a bit of money with Andrew Crofts going to Peterborough but not really enough to bring someone in who is going to make the difference. The better quality player the more wages he is on.
“You try and talk to clubs to do deals and to try and pay a percentage of a player’s wage, like Peterborough are doing with us and Andrew and some clubs will entertain it and some won’t.
“We might get to Thursday, 3 or 4 o’clock and the question we asked earlier in the week, that club might think, ‘well it’s better than getting nothing for the lad if he’s not going to play.’
“It might go to the wire again and we’ll keep trying. We have to do that as we want to try and improve the team and have enough bodies around us to get ready for the next three or four weeks.”
