WELLING were made to pay for a slow start against Newport in Blue Square South on Tuesday night.

The Wings were 2-0 down inside 27 minutes and, despite a spirited comeback, they never had enough firepower to force a draw.

Individual mistakes continue to plague the Wings and the first arrived after 14 minutes when Chris Moore needlessly handled inside the penalty area. Jason Bowen tucked away the spot-kick.

A cheap free-kick given away just before the half-hour saw the unmarked Paul Cochlin head in Andy Gurney's free-kick to double Newport's lead.

Welling responded and pulled one back when Ellis Green's excellent right-wing cross was bundled in by Sam Gargan.

Ohran Stewart and Green both wasted good openings as Welling showed promise before half-time.

An evenly contested second half saw few chances for both sides although Welling nearly snatched a share of the spoils when Stewart just failed to divert his header from Green's cross goalwards after starting the move himself.

Welling entertain Hampton & Richmond on Saturday in Blue Square South.
