Snooker star Greene marches on

RAINHAM’s Gerard Greene booked his place in the LG Cup quarter-finals by beating Irishman Fergal O'Brien 5-4 in Preston last night.

Greene, the world number 63, beat the conqueror of world champion Peter Ebdon in another epic battle at the Guild Hall on a night that saw reigning champion Stephen Lee and Matthew Stephens both knocked out.

Greene has now won more matches in the LG Cup - five including two qualifying rounds - than he managed in the whole of last season and will face either Patrick Wallace or Jimmy Michie, who play today, in the last eight on Friday.
