KENT will ring a few changes ahead of tonight’s must win Twenty20 Cup clash against Surrey at The Brit Oval.
The sell-out game, scheduled for a 5.30pm start weather permitting, will see a season’s cup debut for Roy Key and Geraint Jones. who both return to the county after one-day international duty with England.
Ed Smith, after successive totesport League half-centuries in Kent’s last two matches will also be vying for a place.
Andrew Symonds will again skipper the side, while fellow overseas pro Shahid Afridi lines up for the last match of his brief stay with Spitfires.
According to England and Kent pace bowler Martin Saggers, this is a game the Spitfires have the capability of winning - if all the planning is spot on.
“What we have to do is work out plan B just in case ‘Symo’ or Shahid Afridi don’t make a massive contribution,” said Saggers ahead of Kennington clash. "We have the batters capable of doing that. It's just working out when they play their big shots.
“We’ve learnt some lessons from the defeat to Essex and are hoping to adjust for our last three games.
“It’s such a hit and miss format that you have to remain relaxed about it because anything can happen. The minute you get up tight is the moment you begin to fail.
“Our young middle-order have a chance to express themselves and we’d be wrong to knock them for having a go. It means we go to The Oval knowing it’s a game we can’t afford to lose.
“Being champions we know Surrey are good at this style of cricket and have a batting line up capable of damaging any attack, but if we stick to our plans and play our best then we can beat them.
“After all, it only takes three good balls to remove the likes of Ali Brown, Adam Hollioake and Scott Newman.”
No tickets will be on sale for tonight’s 7,000 sell-out.
