Sponsorship blow for relegated Gillingham

Kent Reliance Building Society is to cut the value of its sponsorship of Gillingham following relegation to League Two.

The Chatham-based mutual has confirmed it is in talks with the Gills over the level of sponsorship for next season in the lower division.

Under a three-year deal that kicked off last season, the society agreed to inject cash in the club in return for the right to have krbs.com emblazoned on the players' shirts. Gills' home ground was renamed krbs Priestfield Stadium.

But the overall value of the deal depended on the club’s success on the field, with the contract pledging more money for promotion but less for relegation.

Kent Reliance chief executive Mike Lazenby said the society remained committed to the club but it could not expect the same level of funding in a lower division.

"An agreement for year one was based upon Gillingham being in League One," he said. "If they were promoted, we would be negotiating to pay more, but because they were demoted, we're negotiating to pay less."

Mr Lazenby said that talks were continuing and so far no deal for next season had been agreed.

A Gills spokesman said: "The club does not discuss contractual agreements with any of its sponsors. We enjoy our relationship with KRBS and together we are looking forward to the new season."
