Margate 5 Havant and Waterlooville 1
CHRIS KINNEAR is targeting a play-off place in Nationwide South and believes it is a realistic aim after this impressive win at Homelands on Saturday. It lifts Margate to a season's high 12th place in the table, as top scorer Che Stadhart took his tally to six in four games.
The result was another boost for the Thanet club, following Wednesday night's Council cabinet meeting, and Kinnear is now setting his sights a lot higher than mere survival.
He said: "We have a bit of good news (about the ground), because we have been battered for two years, and it did give us a lift. Getting back in the top flight of the Conference is going to be our aim, and this win has taken us several places up the table, and if we can win three or four on the trot, then that would put us right up there."
Stadhart's brace, his second in successive weeks proved the cornerstone for the victory, Margate's third in four home games. Rocky Baptiste. fit again Aaron Barnett and substitute Darren Watson got the others, although Havant's Glenn Knight scored the best goal of the afternoon with a 30-yard strike.
The M25 closure caused both teams problems, with Margate goalkeeper Peter Trego arriving late, and meaning a rare start for second choice Nej Hussein. New French defender Romauld Bouadji, signed on non-contract terms, made his debut in a defensive reshuffle that saw Billy Edwards and Alexis Charalambous drop to the bench.
Baptiste put Margate in front after 25 minutes, and then Barnett, added the second nine minutes later. Havant, with former Dover striker David Leworthy now in charge and featuring much travelled Dean Holdsworth in their ranks, made it 2-1 with Knight's spectacular long-range strike. The visiting scorer was then carried off soon after the restart, after coming off worse in a challenge by Adrian Clarke.
Stadhart scored his first of the afternoon, taking advantage as Baptiste's first shot was only half cleared. Then the former Gravesend striker made it 11 in 14 games, with his second of the game, firing past Havant goalkeeper Gareth Howells.
Watson replaced Baptiste and again made a major contribution to the afternoon. His arrival on the pitch set up the previous home win against Weston Super Mare, and he scored Margate's fifth this time, as Howells got little protection from his defenders as Kinnear's men celebrated hitting five for the first time this season.
The boss added: " The second half was a really good performance and we created lots of chances."
