Stimson: Keep it simple away from home

Bradford v Gillingham

Gillingham boss Mark Stimson has told his side to keep it simple as he looks to end the club’s miserable away form.

The Gills head to promotion hopefuls Bradford on Saturday after consecutive defeats on the road at Exeter (3-0), Aldershot (2-1) and Shrewsbury (7-0).

Those defeats are in contrast to Gills' impressive home form and Stimson has instructed his players to cut out the tricks and concentrate on the basics.

"We don’t want to keep winning at home, then going away and not producing,” said Stimson.

"It’s frustrating. Going back to our last away game (against Exeter), there were some bad decisions with the ball, simple things. We were trying to complicate it and we can’t do that.

“We need to keep it as simple as possible and if we do that, we’ll get the right result.

“The game has to be kept simple. When you watch these world class players, there are not many tricks – it’s simple football with lots of movement.

“We produced that last weekend and we need to try and do that away from home.”

Stimson will have a selection dilemma in midfield this weekend as Adam Miller returns from injury and Andrew Crofts comes back from international duty.

The Gillingham manager, however, is unlikely to change a winning combination.

“The boys in there at the moment are doing really well,” he said.

“We have a decent combination with Mark Bentley and Curtis Weston. We’ve got Stuart Lewis waiting in the wings and Adam Miller coming back who can play that position.

“It’s healthy because there are a lot of games coming up.”

That could mean Crofts, who last week was replaced as Gills captain by Barry Fuller, is likely to have to make do with a place on the bench.
