Barry Fuller has been warned to be more careful by Gillingham manager Mark Stimson after clocking up his seventh booking on Saturday.
Stimson was unhappy that Fuller got a cheap booking at the end of Saturday’s win over Rotherham, after the Gills skipper became embroiled in a fracas that involved a number of players from each team.
Fuller has already received a one match suspension this season, after collecting five bookings, and he is now heading towards double figures and a further ban.
Stimson said: “It was unfortunate Barry Fuller picked up a silly booking right at the end. That’s put him on seven now and he has to be careful, because he’s an aggressive player and we don’t want him getting to 10 bookings early on and to be missing him over the Christmas period. That could be costly.”
Fuller will receive a two-game ban if he accumulates three more bookings between now and the second Sunday of April, and will also receive a warning from the FA as to his future conduct.
Fuller was fortunate to still be on the pitch after recovering from a heavy first-half challenge from Rotherham’s Danny Harrison - a tackle which saw the opposition player receive a straight red card.
It was that kind of attitude that led to Fuller taking the captaincy and the Gills fans taking him to their heart.
“He might not be the biggest but he’ll put his body on the line for anything and give his all,” said Stimson.
“At first the physio said he wasn’t going to get up, and we were ready to make a change, but he was up on his feet and running around again. He went home with no problems and didn’t even need any treatment.
“He’s a good character. I’ve known him a few years and he’s a tough one.”
