Medway's hopes of producing two ABA champions in the space of a month didn’t materialise last weekend after Sarah Seager was beaten in the all-female ABA finals in Aldershot.
The Snodland 17-year-old of Strood ABC was aiming to follow in the footsteps of John Saunders, who won the boys version of the title for Chatham’s St Mary’s Boxing Club only weeks earlier.
But in Newcastle’s Carly Whealands, Seager found an exceptionally strong opponent and a one-sided contest ended in a second-round stoppage at the Queen’s Army Gym.
"Sarah was overpowered," admitted Strood trainer Chris Ripley. "The other girl was very strong and I also think Sarah was rather overwhelmed with the size of the occasion.
"It wasn’t a normal bout it was an ABA final so there is always nerves and I’ve seen it happen to the boys as well.
"It was disappointing but we have achieved a lot in six months and Sarah will not let this setback affect her. She’s a strong girl and she’ll be back next year."
