Strike bowler making rapid progress

Amjad Khan celebrates yet another wicket
Amjad Khan celebrates yet another wicket

ENGLAND’S one-time tearaway strike bowler Frank 'Typhoon' Tyson once said that "to bowl fast is to revel in the glad animal action, to thrill in the physical power and enjoy a certain sneaking feeling of superiority over mortals who play the game".

Against Tyson’s former county of Lancashire, it was Kent’s Amjad Khan who revelled in that air of superiority as he raced down the Nackington Road slope to claim seven wickets in the game and take his season’s tally to 29.

Having shown year-on-year improvement since making his first-class debut for Kent four seasons ago, the Danish-born strike bowler is now being mentioned as a potential England player.

His work with Australian legend Dennis Lillee has helped hone Khan's action to such an extent that his county skipper Rob Key now believes his new-ball strike bowler is ready to make the step up.

He hopes to complete his change in nationality this autumn and there is the little matter of staying fit and in-form, but Khan clearly has a penchant for knocking over such obstacles.

"I’ve been bowling a better line and length this summer and at a better, sustained pace so I’m more than happy with how the season has gone so far," said the 25-year-old.

"I’m also more sensible with my practice and how much I bowl, I warm up well, especially ahead of championship matches, and take rest time when I can."

As for his chances of getting his England qualification passed by the Home Office in time for him to possibly tour of Australia this winter, Khan remains phlegmatic.

He said: "It would be my dream scenario if that fell into place in time for me to play for England this winter, but I really can’t afford to look that far ahead.

"I must stay fit and keep bowling well for Kent and if I do that then at least I give myself a chance of being picked for a tour."
