Sussex County League sides Crowborough Athletic and Rye United could be included in the Kent League, Premier Division next season.

The Premier Division is set to be extended from 17 teams to 19 for next season.

Erith & Belvedere and VCD Athletic have both been promoted to Ryman League, Division 1 North.

Two clubs from the Kent Invicta League will also be promoted into the Kent League in a “one-off move”.

Invicta League winners Phoenix Sports will almost certainly be one of the two teams.

All of the decisions were made by the Football Association’s step 5/6 review group, acting with the authority of the FA’s Leagues Committee.

They are subject to any appeal and confirmation at the league’s annual meeting.

The FA have also allowed Rochester United to remain in the Kent League, Premier Division, despite their ground failing to meet step 5 grading criteria.

They are awaiting a Football Stadia grant before the works can be carried out. That is due imminently.

Secretary of Rochester, Tony Wheeler said: “It’s great news and just what we’ve been hoping for. We’re now committed to getting the work done on the ground as soon as possible.”

Kent League chairman Denise Richmond said: “Hopefully this announcement will put an end to the speculation that has dominated many conversations for recent months.

“While some clubs may be surprised at the lateral movement of clubs from Sussex to Kent, it was one of the many options discussed at various stages in the past few years.

“We will look forward to welcoming Crowborough Athletic and Rye United at our AGM in June and the increase in clubs, I am sure, will mean another competitive season of football.”

Crowborough are not happy with the move, however, and have already appealed against the decision.

A statement, from club chairman Tony Bowen, said: “We will work closely with Rye as we understand they also strongly reject the proposal.

“The whole club and particularly senior football management will continue to make plans for competing in the Sussex County Football League, Division 1 next season.

“Crowborough Athletic FC has been competing in Sussex since forming in 1894 and the committee is determined to ensure that this will continue for season 2013-14.”
