Peter Taylor says Gillingham players are a different class – on the training ground, anyway.

The Gills boss saw his side limp to a 1-0 defeat by Oldham at Priestfield on Saturday and says they feel the pressure at times.

That needs to change, starting at home to fellow League 1 strugglers Stevenage on Tuesday night.

Taylor said: “A lot of the supporters, if they saw the players training, would probably think they’re different players at times.

“I’m sure all around the country a lot of managers would say the same because there’s no pressure on training, you relax and you take chances.

“When you play a game and there’s a result involved, sometimes that does hold you back a touch. But that’s where experience of playing lots of games comes in and that’s where you’ve got to be strong and have great characters.”

Taylor revealed there could be a new signing before Thursday as he sets about shaping a team capable of climbing League 1.

He’s already brought in Craig Fagan, John Mousinho and Elliott Hewitt but Gills were poor against Oldham.

Taylor said: “The players are not all of a sudden thinking they’re playing fantastically and everybody else has got it wrong.

“We know it was a poor performance and we know we can do a lot better.

“The chairman knows I still think we need something else in the building. We’ve been talking about that and there may be something before Thursday.”
