Peter Taylor isn’t thinking about the possibility of being out of work again.

The interim boss could be taking charge of Gillingham for the last time when they host non-league Brackley in the FA Cup on Saturday because chairman Paul Scally intends to appoint a permanent manager before next weekend’s League 1 game at Sheffield United.

Taylor said: “I’m not even thinking about the job. It’s a huge weekend for us because it’s the first round of the FA Cup.

“It’s a tremendous competition and I’m sure clubs like ourselves are all desperate to get to the third round and get Manchester United away and then concentrate on the league.

“It could be my last game, so hopefully we’ll get a result. That will help the situation. I can understand people talking about it but I’m certainly not. All I’m thinking about is trying to beat Brackley. That’s our test at the minute."

Taylor, though, has made no secret of his desire to succeed Martin Allen and is satisfied with his work as interim boss. He has no idea who else is in the frame but is happy to advise chairman Mr Scally on areas to improve, regardless of who gets the job.

He said: “Two wins from four games isn’t bad. I’ve identified certain things that could improve and certain areas where we could do with something different in the squad.

“They would all be things I would report back to Paul, whether it’s me in charge or not. I’ve already spoken to him about that."
