MARGATE youngster Miles Kasiri is being tipped as one of four British youngsters who could figure in Great Britain’s Euro African Davis Cup zonal tie against Israel in Tel Aviv in early March.
Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski’s future in the competition has been the subject of much speculation, since Britain dropped out of the elite top-16 following defeat in Austria last year.
Now LTA performance director David Felgate and Davis Cup team captain Jeremy Bates are monitoring the progress of youngsters like Kasiri who starts his 2005 season this week playing in a Futures Event in Leeds.
The 18-year-old sprang to national prominence last summer when he was junior Wimbledon boys runner-up .
He is coached by former Kent county player Colin Beecher. Bromley-born Beecher said: "Miles has unbelievable ground-strokes, a fantastic backhand, and is a powerful mover around the court. He wants to succeed so badly, and playing in tournaments like this one is Leeds is an important first step in the men's game."
Kasiri is due to play his first match on Tuesday. Ranked around 800 in the world and 25 in Britain he will be on the road for the next seven weeks competing in tournaments at Barnstaple, Wrexham Sunderland and Redbridge.
They offer him the chance of picking up valuable ranking points and prize-money, and with Felgate and Bates monitoring his and the others' progress, good results could mean a first Davis Cup call-up may not be out of the question.
