GILLINGHAM manager Stan Ternent believes referee Andy Woolmer should have ruled out Wolves' stoppage-time equaliser on Saturday.

With his side leading 2-1 thanks to a 90th minute lob from new signing Michael Flynn, Ternent was on the verge of seeing his side pull off a shock result.

"First of all there was a foul on our centre-back and then the lad has handled it," Ternent said.

Wanderers' boss Glenn Hoddle disagreed and said Leon Clarke was innocent of any handball, concluding: "I did see someone handle the ball, but in my opinion it was the hand of a defender."

Four second-half goals could not disguise the disappointing performance of both sides, although Ternent claimed: "I was pleased with our performance overall".

Blaming the wind and poor playing surface for the terrible game, Ternent continued: "The whole team played pretty well but I'm just frustrated that we get ourselves in front twice and we didn't, even at that late stage of the game, close up shop.

"It was a scrappy game but I was quite pleased and thought that we did okay. Sometimes you need a bit of a break to go your way. I thought we had won it right at the death, but it wasn't to be. Sometimes when you are down the bottom this sort of thing happens."

Ternent did admit to some frustration and said: "We had an ideal opportunity to get three points today, but we got one and even that is a step in the right direction.

"I'm frustrated by the way we defended. When we scored the first goal they got straight back at us and Steve Banks had to make a fantastic save. They didn't have to work hard for their goals and that frustrates me a little.

"Overall it's a good point, we drew last week but we need to turn the draws into wins."

Looking ahead to Tuesday night's clash with West Ham Ternet said: "I will not have to lift the team, they will be looking forward to playing again so soon.

"What other teams do is of no consequence, unless of course they all keep losing and you'd only need 30-points to stay up, but that's not going to happen."

When asked where he is looking to strengthen the squad in the all-important run-in, the one word "everywhere" he murmured spoke volumes.
