Gillingham 0 West Ham 1

MARLON HAREWOOD'S 13th minute goal was enough to give West Ham the points on a disappointing night at Priestfield.

Harewood bundled the ball home from close range from Matthew Etherington's cross to inflict the Gills' first home defeat in .

Bobby Zamora missed a great chance to put the Hammers 2-0 up with Gills' only real chances of the half falling to Andrew Crofts and Paul Smith who tested Stephen Bywater.

Teddy Sheringham thundered a free kick against the bar but Gills' best chance came when Smith had a shot from 12 yards out but cleared the bar with Bywater beaten.

Matt Jarvis brought a late stop from Bywater and the same player just failed to connect with Smith's cross-shot, but West Ham held on.
