Last week I pointed out to you all that Stepit Up Louie is arguably the best dog we have here over the 380m distance.
So his win price here at the weekend of 7/2 in a top grade A1 race looked to be excellent value in, what on paper, looked a pretty hot race with most of the top sprinters in opposition.
Running from trap five, he made a decent enough start trapping out in second. His early pace saw him take up the lead at the first bend to go on and win by a length from Newcastle Lad.
The dog, trained by Julie Luckhurst, is a trio backer’s dream having only finished out of the first three once in his last 15 races.
Take note that dogs of his calibre are always a good form guide, so we can expect a big run next time from Newcastle Lad.
He looked an unlucky loser, having missed his break followed by bumping at the first bend. However, he improved his position from fifth to get the runner-up place and against this level of opposition, that is impressive.
In the top-flight S1 race over 540m, Time To Think romped home by three-and-a-quarter lengths to land a win for our new trainer Katie O’Flaherty.
She joined us recently having previously trained at Henlow and is in the process of grading her dogs onto our race card.
The dog has clearly taken a liking to Crayford and his win time of 33.73sec will see him win more races here over the coming weeks.
His racing career started at Henlow in late 2013 and he climbed up the grades there from A8 to A3 by January this year. Those races were all over 460m, so 540m here seems to have worked the oracle for a dog that clearly has that extra class.
Saturday evening’s card features the latest final in the Owners Bonus Series – this time for greyhounds in grade A3 over 380m.
Last weekend’s semi-finals were won by Severly Damaged and Quivers Dino, who came home in 23.70 and 23.94 respectively. Severly Damaged sprung a bit of a surprise winning at 5-1, while Quivers Dino scored for favourite backers at 2/1.
Severly Damaged looks a good thing for the final as a veteran of more than 100 races here.
He has raced in top grade A1 so this grade is well within his scope. I expect him to win on Saturday, hopefully around decent odds of 7/2.
