CHARLTON’S reserves were crowned league champions at The Valley on Monday night when a point gained from a 1-1 draw with Watford was good enough for the club to secure back-to-back titles.
The Addicks needed only to avoid defeat against the Hornets to register the Charlton’s fourth reserve league success in the last seven seasons, and Glynn Snodin’s men looked well on their way to victory when Jason Euell opened the scoring with a first-half penalty.
But dogged Watford hit back – also from the penalty spot – through striker Jason Norville and that was to be the end of scoring in a game that, in truth, was sterile to say the least.
Despite first-team concerns and the expectation it would be a youthful Addicks line-up Bryan Hughes and Kevin Lisbie were asked to make up a trio of senior professionals alongside Euell.
And cheered on by a crowd of 1,718 who turned up to watch the match, as well as to take advantage of a host of special offers on food and drink, the home side led on 28 minutes.
Persistent play from Lisbie led to a handball in the box, but Norville restored parity after being tripped inside the area by defender Mark Ricketts eight minutes before the break.
Neither side fashioned much in the second period allowing Charlton, who drew at Norwich the previous week, to crack open the champagne at the final whistle.
There wasn’t the same cause for celebration lower down at the club, though, with the U18s going down 3-0 to their Leicester City equivalents on Saturday.
Coach Mark Robson gave experience to a number of the club’s schoolboys, and the young Addicks conceded all three goals in the second half.
