Top awards for hockey duo

Olympic bronze medallist Alistair McKean, and hockey internationals John Maylam and Mel Clewlow were among those honoured at the Canterbury Sports Awards hosted by the University of Kent.

Guests of honour included the Mayor of Canterbury, Cllr Carolyn Parry and Olympic bronze medallist Ian Wynne. The evening was compered by Rob Smith from BBC TV’s South East Today.

The full list of awards were: Junior Sports Performer of The Year: Phoebe Stone. Senior Sports Performer of the Year: Mel Clewlow. Veteran Sports Performer of the Year: John Maylam. Junior Sports Club of the Year: Greenhill Gymnastics Club. Senior Sports Club of the Year: Canterbury City Football Club.

Disabled Sports Performer: Harriet Gay, Senior Disabled Sports Performer: Alistair McKean, Coach of the Year: Mick Santer

The evening was a great success and included impressive demonstrations from University of Kent Sports Scholars past and present including Great Britain Trampolining Squad members Jason Plowman and Matt Swaffer and an Archery Challenge from Sam Perkins.
