GILLINGHAM captain Paul Smith's season to remember has been rounded off with a grand slam of trophies after Medway Messenger and Medway Today readers overwhelmingly voted him their Player of the Year.
The club's captain marvel polled 190 votes, romping home from runner-up Paul Shaw on 43 and Chris Hope third with 40.
The readers' accolade follows that of the Gills Independent Supporters' Club who voted him their Player of the Year, both home and away. Smith also won Gillingham Football Club's own award.
The modest midfielder, who genuinely believed that other team-mates were more deserving as Player of the Year, is thrilled to have won so many end-of-season awards voted for by supporters. He said: "All the Gillingham players value the fans' support up and down the country and they have played a big part in the club's success in staying in Division 1.
"If someone had told me at the start of the season that I would be picking up these trophies I would have laughed. There is no better way for any player to round off a season."
After returning from a holiday in Cornwall next week, Smith and his partner Louise will turn their attentions to their wedding in Chelmsford on Friday, May 31, when all his team-mates will be present.
Former Gillingham crowd favourite Andy Thomson, now with Queens Park Rangers, is also on the guest list. But player-manager Andy Hessenthaler is unable to attend as he is on holiday.
How the votes were shared: Paul Smith (190), Paul Shaw (43), Chris Hope (40), Iffy Onuora (23), Marlon King (23), Simon Osborn (17), Andy Hessenthaler (13), David Perpetuini (13), Guy Ipoua (9), Nyron Nosworthy (8), Barry Ashby (7), Marcus Browning (7), Vince Bartram (6), Ty Gooden (6), Guy Butters (1), Roland Edge (1).
