James Tredwell intends to make a decision by the end of the month about whether he should remain as Kent captain.

After the last game of the season against Lancashire, the spinner was reported to be considering stepping down from the role after a turbulent campaign which saw him balance Kent commitments with time in the England ODI and t20 fold.

The 31-year-old missed five of Kent’s championship matches, two YB40 clashes, four t20 games and the tour match with New Zealand this summer. And with the prospect of further international commitments with England in Australia this winter, plus the visits of India and Sri Lanka to England next summer, it might mean Tredwell’s availability is limited once again in 2014.

He said: “There have been some pretty good highs and lows for me individually this year but there is no doubt I have found it tough this season.

“When you are away during pre-season and at various points for pretty big chunks of the season, it’s hard.

“It’s tough to be sat making decisions about teams and lineups and players when you’re in a hotel room 200 miles away.”

The New Romney ace revealed: “I have spoken to a lot of different people but it’s up to me to make a decision and the quicker I do it, the better.

“Hopefully, within a couple of weeks, I’ll let the club know my intentions and then everyone can get on with planning for next year.”

He added: “I am Kent through and through, I have been at the club since the age of nine. I am proud to have been offered the role and have always wanted to make the most of it.

“But at the same time, everyone wants the chance to play at the highest level and I would hope people understand that the opportunities do not come around every day.”

Despite finishing on a high with a historic run-chase against Lancashire, Tredwell admitted the Kent campaign had been disappointing.

He said: “It was a tough year at times. It wasn’t the season we wanted but there are plenty of positives to take going forward.

“It’s an important time now. We want to plan towards next year and improve on this year.”
