Departed Kent skipper James Tredwell’s faith in his international future has been rewarded with a call-up to the England one-day and t20 squads to tour Australia in the New Year.
The 31-year-old stepped down from the Kent captaincy at the end of the season after almost a year spent splitting his time between domestic and international duty.
Tredwell sought advice from England management before taking the decision to vacate the Kent role - with predecessor Rob Key retaking the reins - and on Tuesday morning was included in their squad for the limited overs tours Down Under in January and February, which include five ODIs and three t20 internationals.
The New Romney spinner is one of six members of the 16-man ODI squad who will fly out to Melbourne on January 5 ahead of the first ODI at the MCG on January 12.
Further ODIs follow in Brisbane on January 17, Sydney two days later, Perth on January 24 and Adelaide on January 26.
The t20 series begins in Hobart on January 29 with a game at the MCG two days later and the finale at Stadium Australia in Sydney on February 2.
Selector Geoff Miller said: “We have an important period of limited overs cricket coming up with an ICC World T20 in Bangladesh in March and we are just over a year away from the ICC Cricket World Cup in New Zealand and Australia.
“These two series against Australia allow valuable opportunities for players to push for places in both squads and given the rivalry between the sides both series will no doubt be keenly contested.”
