Kent captain James Tredwell hopes he has done himself justice on England duty this summer.
Tredwell couldn’t quite take the chance to make history for England as they suffered a narrow defeat in a rain-affected ICC Champions Trophy final against India at Edgbaston on Sunday.
He was included in the line-up in place of the injured Graeme Swann for the third straight game but was unable to record his fifth-straight win for his country, despite having the chance to win the match, and the trophy, by hitting a six from the final delivery.
Tredwell admitted: “It’s a double-edged sword because the last few weeks have personally been a good experience but there is massive disappointment that we weren’t able to get over the line. It was gutting to get to the final but lose. Sport can be cruel and it was on Sunday.
“I hope I have done myself justice,” the 31-year-old said. “Hopefully, I have taken the opportunity which has been given to me. I’d like to think I’ve continued the good work I put in over the winter, starting in India.
“Swanny has been performing at a high level for a long time but hopefully I have shown that, given the opportunity, I can do at least as good a job as him in one-day cricket.”
The spinner did make an impact as England in the match reduced to 20-overs a side.
He took 1-25 and held two catches as India closed on 129-7. However, he was back in the middle when England slipped to 113-8, still needing 17 runs from the final eight deliveries. He managed to hit five runs from his first three balls but needing six for a win from the final delivery by Ravichandran Ashwin, he failed to make contact.
He returned 0-32 in two overs as England lost the first of two t20s against New Zealand by five runs at the Oval on Tuesday.
