James Tredwell insists now is the right time to give opportunities to new faces in the Kent set-up.

The skipper handed teenager Matt Hunn his first class debut – and the new ball – in the LV= County Championship Division 2 finale against Lancashire this week, just hours after the paceman had agreed a contract for 2014 following impressive performances for the 2nd XI.

Hunn’s selection followed Sam Billings, 22, being handed the wicketkeeper’s spot in place of Geraint Jones and Adam Ball, 20, also featuring in the side for the final two games of the season, with the experienced Charlie Shreck making way against Lancashire this week.

Tredwell said: “We’re not playing for much at the moment so it’s not a bad time to give opportunities to others.

“We want players to push for places in the team. Sam did that, scoring heavy runs and Matt has done well for the 2nds but it doesn’t mean players like Geraint are being discarded.”

After collecting the wicket of Oliver Newbie on the opening day – and breaking the bat of opener Luis Reece with his first delivery from the Pavilion End – Hunn accounted for South African Ashwell Prince early on day two.

Tredwell admitted it was a “horrible time of the season, when tough decisions have to be made” about the future of some players, but was pleased to welcome Hunn and fellow young fast bowler Charlie Hartley who also agreed a deal for 2014.
