GILLINGHAM play the second of three pre-season friendlies in as many days tonight at Windsor with the clock rapidly counting down on the club’s triallists.
Player-manager Andy Hessenthaler included former Arsenal striker Carlin Itonga and ex-Southend defender Leon Johnson for last night’s goalless draw at Whyteleafe. Itonga partnered fellow triallist Stuart Douglas up front in the first-half while Johnson played at the heart of the defence. A fourth triallist, Neil Smith, played in midfield.
Hessenthaler, who watched last night’s match with coach Richard Hill, is likely to play all the triallists in tonight's match at Ryman League Windsor before making up his mind at the weekend when chairman Paul Scally returns from holiday.
Out-of-contract pair Marcus Browning and Mark Saunders are also scheduled to play. Like the triallists, their futures also hang in the balance with decisions expected to be announced at the weekend.
Browning and Saunders are also likely to play tomorrow at Dover where Hessenthaler could give a club debut to newcomer Tommy Johnson. The former Aston Villa, Derby and Glasgow Celtic striker has been troubled by a thigh strain since his arrival at Priestfield from Kilmarnock two weeks ago.
“We have earmarked Tommy to play in Saturday's friendly against Tottenham but if he feels right, then we might give him a run out at Dover,” said Hessenthaler. Tonight's match at Windsor kicks off at 7.45pm.
