FOUR of British boxing's biggest names from one of the sport's golden eras are appearing in Broadstairs next month.
Charlie Magri, Alan Minter, John H. Stracey, and Dave 'Boy' Green will be the guest speakers for a boxing dinner at the town's Pavilion Theatre on Wednesday, November 19.
The quartet made their names during the 1970s and 1980s with Magri, whose older brother George lives in Ashford, winning the world flyweight championship in March, 1983.
Today Magri, the event organiser, is licensee of The Victoria public house, in Mile End, east London, and has staged several successful after dinner shows including two at London's Tower Hotel.
Minter, an Olympic light-middleweight bronze medallist at Munich in 1972, held the world middleweight title before losing to 'Marvellous' Marvin Hagler in 1980, while Stracey held the world welterweight title in 1975.
Green, also primarily a welterweight, boxed under the nickname of 'The Fen Tiger' and in his prime held both British and European titles. He twice featured in world title bouts losing first to Mexican Carlos Palomino (1977) and then to the legendary Sugar Ray Leonard in March, 1980.
The four men, all of whom are good friends, will speak about their careers and take questions from the floor as well as signing autographs.
There will also be a a raffle and an auction of boxing memorabilia featuring photographs, and gloves including a pair signed by Panamanian great Roberto Duran. The evening starts at 7.30pm and includes a three-course meal.
Comedian 'Mad' Mark Peters is the compere with female vocalist Stevie Sherlock providing the musical interest. Tickets cost £60 per head and may be obtained by phoning 07721 389136, 0208 9806609 or 07956 524060.
