Adam Riley says he is striving to make himself as effective as possible in his role as Kent’s junior spinner.
The 21-year-old understudy to skipper James Tredwell emerged from a testing Friends Life t20 campaign with great credit – his figures of 6-230 produced an impressive economy rate of less than seven runs an over, which was up there with the leading wicket-takers in the competition.
One of only six Kent players to play in every one of the 10 games, Riley was given the extra responsibility of opening the bowling.
He said: “I enjoyed the experience and getting a good run of games. It was challenging at times and opening the bowling was an added pressure.
“I had no previous experience and was nervous in the first couple of games, making sure I put the ball in the right spot.
“I didn’t bowl particularly well against Middlesex at Uxbridge – but we didn’t get enough runs there.”
Riley’s form in white ball cricket came on top of his career-best first class figures of 7-150 in the championship draw against Hampshire last month.
He said: “It is something I will never forget and it has been my best season in terms of first team opportunities and statistics. Playing all the games in the t20 was more than I ever thought I would.
“I wasn’t needed at Worcester in the championship but hope to be involved in the Yorkshire Bank 40 game there on Sunday.
“It is the halfway stage in the group and a good run in the second half could see us qualify as the best second-placed team in what I think is the strongest of all three groups.
