I’d be lying if I didn’t say we were disappointed to lose at Bournemouth on the opening day because we wanted to get points on the board as soon as possible. But we won’t get too down as there were some positives to take.
We started brightly in the second half and had the momentum but it was a terrific strike from Lewis Grabban to win the game for them and we couldn’t find a way back.
Yann Kermorgant’s equaliser was also a goal to savour and he and Marvin Sordell played well together, as did Simon Church when he came on. Both new faces showed glimpses of what they are about but it might take a little bit of time for them to get used to the squad and the way we play – and get to grips with Yann’s flick-ons!
In the lead-up to the first goal, some of the lads felt that there may have been a foul. We were still trying to organise and they took it early and caught us out. It was lack of discipline from us but at the same time we felt a bit aggrieved the decision went against us.
We can’t blame the loss on the referee, though. There were a few decisions which we contested that we would like to have gone our way but I’m sure things will even themselves out.
We won’t be disheartened and it’s important we remain unified and positive.
Saturday was only the first game of the season and if a couple of results go your way, you can move straight up and that’s what we’ll be looking to do. We know we’ve got goals in us – we showed last season that we’re a good Championship side.
Moving onwards, we have a home game this Saturday against Middlesbrough to look forward to.
Our form last season at The Valley was not what we would have liked but we ended the season strongly and hopefully will continue that momentum.
