Charlton striker Luke Varney was hoping to start this campaign on the front-foot after joining his team-mates back at Sparrows Lane earlier this week.

The Addicks reported back for pre-season training and Varney is keen to steer clear of the injury trouble that ruled him out for two months this time last year.

"It was really disappointing to pick up the injury as I wanted to show everyone what I was all about," said Varney who suffered an ankle injury in just the second pre-season match.

"Of course it set me back a bit, but I've got no excuses really. I didn't achieve what I wanted to achieve last year.

"I've got a lot more to show the fans, and especially the manager."
