LUKE VARNEY punished his home-town club with his first goal for Charlton as they moved into second place in the Championship at The Valley on Saturday.

Varney, who drifted into semi-professional football after being released by Leicester, struck in the 24th minute when he prodded home Chris Iwelumo's knock-down.

"I'm absolutely delighted to get off the mark with my first goal for the club," said Varney afterwards.

"It didn't matter who it was against, though I expect to get a lot of stick from my mates who support Leicester."

Manager Alan Pardew, who saw his side enjoy back-to-back win in five days, added: "I'm highly satisfied with with our performances this week.

"We set ourselves a bit of a target with our midweek display and it would have been easy to have come out not played as well.

"But in the first half we picked up from where we left off against Norwich on Tuesday.

"So it was another good day for Charlton.

Chris Iwelumo gave Charlton a 17th minute lead when he knocked in Zheng Zhi's header at the near post.

Though Leicester started brightly, they faded badly as Charlton coasted to an easy win.
