Kent youngster Scott Wagstaff and academy team-mate Jonjo Shelvey stand by to make their Charlton debuts at Barnsley on Saturday.
With the club out of play-off contention following the crushing disappointment of Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Queens Park Rangers, manager Alan Pardew will turn to the club’s emerging Academy graduates in the hope of ending the season on a high.
Wagstaff, 18, from Leybourne, near Maidstone, scooped the club’s Young Player of the Year award on Sunday night and was on the bench for the first time at Loftus Road on Saturday. Shelvey, 16, warmed up before the game.
“A couple of members of our backroom staff asked if they were good enough,” said Pardew. “I replied that they wouldn’t be in the squad if they weren’t good enough.
“So they will play. I didn’t bring Scott on against Rangers because I didn’t feel it was the kind of game to bring him on for his debut. As for Jonjo, he was getting a taste of the first team dressing room for the first time.
“But in the next couple of games he will make his first team debut. Those two lads, and indeed some of our other youngsters, will play a big a bigger role next season than some envisage.”
Should Romford youngster Shelvey make his debut at Oakwell he will set a record as Charlton’s youngest first team player since Paul Konchesky broke into the side on August 16, 1997.
