ROD WALLACE vowed to carry on scoring after getting off the mark for Gillingham with the equaliser in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Rotherham.

Wallace, who won championship titles with Leeds and Glasgow Rangers, showed all his old predatory instincts when he nipped through the Rotherham defence to turn Guy Ipoua’s 17th minute cross into goal.

“I need to get a few more games under my belt but once my fitness levels improve I'm sure the goals will follow,” said Wallace.

“Give Guy Ipoua credit because he delivered the perfect cross which Rotherham found hard to defend. All strikers like to believe that when you get the first goal for a new club, the rest will follow.”

Wallace was left lamenting the one that got away four minutes from the end when he missed his kick in front of goal. “It was just one of those things,” he said. “Given the chance on another day I’ll stick that kind of chance away.”

Player-manager Andy Hessenthaler surprisingly withdrew himself with 18 minutes remaining. He said: “I had a problem with my back and I felt it tightening so I thought fresh legs would help. But I felt good and want to be available for my old club Watford on Saturday.”

Ipoua's needless 46th minute caution for dissent makes him liable for a one-match suspension. Goalkeeper Jason Brown will be absent from Priestfield this week as he is on duty with the Wales Under-21 squad in Italy.
