THE Wanderer returned for the Invicta Dynamos this weekend and lit up the ice with a man-of-the-match performance to help the team end the season on a high.
Duane Ward shrugged off the illness that laid him low and incognito for more than a week to show the kind of natural talent that has Mos fans desperately hoping he signs for another season.
On Saturday, in the double header with the Isle of Wight Raiders, the Mos lost 13-9 in a highly entertaining game, but last night at the Ice Bowl they turned the tables and won 6-4.
Surprisingly, it was the home side who got the early goal at 2.37, Ward picking up the puck close to the blue line and drag-flicking it with power and precision past Andy Moffat.
Dynamos started like men possessed with Peter Korff missing a great chance as the shots rained in on Moffat in the first five minutes.
Isle of Wight started to test Matt Van Der Velden and he made a string of excellent saves to deny Daniel Larter, Jason Coles and Rob Lamey.
Ward then sent the vocal home crowd wild with a classy goal, drawing netminder Moffat one way before sending the puck the other at 9.59.
Andy Pickles made it 2-1 with a cracking shot, prompting captain Phil Chard to up his team’s tempo and trigger a series of hard hits over the ice.
The second period started disappointingly with a textbook two-on-one breakaway goal by Scott Carter and Lamey to make it 2-2 at 25.54.
Ward then used all his trickery to grab his hat-trick, making a simple save a difficult juggling act for Moffat when he got an edge to the puck, popped it up into the air and into the back of the net at 32.54.
Three minutes into the third period and seven seconds into their second powerplay, Sean Clement’s excellent pass was tipped in by Ward.
At 48.15 Korff made up for his earlier miss with a brilliant effort, sending the puck past Moffat’s ears.
The Raiders pulled it back to 5-4 with two goals in just over a minute, but Elliott Andrew’s excellent one-on-one effort at 53.51 sealed the win.
Player coach Carl Greenhous said: “It was a good way to end the season. Wardo, Vandy and Andrews had great games tonight.
"Duane showed his still possesses all the skill and ability he had when he first came to this country, Elliott finished the season with a strong performance and Vandy again did well.”
Greenhous himself was also superb this weekend in his last two games for the Dynamos and he signed off with Saturday’s man of the match accolade.
Young Carl Ambler was given a start at Planet Ice, but was replaced by the more experienced Van Der Velden midway through the second period with the Raiders 9-4 up.
Admittedly the Raiders they fired 34 shots at Ambler and 32 at Van Der Velden to the Dynamos’ 38 and deserved to win.
Matt Beveridge (2), Greenhous (2), Jake French (2), Korff, Andrews and Stuart Low got the Mos goals.
Team manager Andy Mason said: “It feels good to end the season with a home win and now all the work starts again looking forward to next season.”
