Watford v Gills: how the players rated

STAR MAN: Paul Smith
STAR MAN: Paul Smith

JASON BROWN: Always a dependable keeper and didn't let anyone down following his late call-up. 6

NYRON NOSWORTHY: Not always the most confident looking player but kept his cool against some quick footed opponents. 6

BARRY ASHBY: His own-goal was the only black mark on a solid performance at the back as a replacement for Chris Hope. 6

IAN COX: Was left stranded as Danny Webber danced around to help open Watford's account. 6

RICHARD ROSE: Solid defending but was restricted to his own half and never really made much running in attacking positions. 6

NICKY SOUTHALL: Gills had numerous corners but the chance to make any use of them was wasted by some poor deliveries. 6

PAUL SMITH: Was always there when the going got tough and his determination was vital as Gills bravely fought back. 7

MIKE FLYNN: Good feet, long throw and a willingness to get involved, although was a little off the pace on his first start. 6

ANDREW CROFTS: A lively performance from the youngster but could have done with picking out a few more forward balls. 6

DARREN BYFIELD: Put in the effort but still seems way short of the early season promise that he showed after joining in the summer. 6

DARIUS HENDERSON: Had plenty of action and several headed efforts that went close but not close enough. 6

IWAN ROBERTS: A late substitute who had no time to make a significant impact.
