Sheffield Wednesday 0 Charlton 0

ALAN PARDEW heaped praised on Nicky Weaver after the Charlton stopper pulled off two stunning saves to preserve a point at Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night.

The boss also hailed the performance of Paddy McCarthy in defence, suggesting the Owls spent much of the game in the ascendancy.

Pardew said: "Nicky and Paddy were superb. Nicky's a great character and the save he made in the first half was almost as good as the one David James made at the weekend, it was brilliant."

Jonathan Fortune replaced the injured Madjid Bougherra (foot) while loan signing from Fulham Lee Cook joined fit-again Sam Sodje on the bench.

The first half saw Weaver's one-handed save from Richard Wood's header and Kelly Youga booked after going head to head with Owls' Jermaine Johnson - Youga faces a one-match ban for the Blackpool game.

After the break, Weaver saved from Lee Bullen while McCarthy thwarted the hosts with two stunning block tackles.

Pardew said: "Sheffield Wednesday gave a typical Championship performance against a team chasing promotion and you have to respect that."
