TWO second-half goals condemned Canterbury to defeat in their Slazenger English Women's League match against Slough at Polo Farm on Sunday.

Cathy Gilliat-Smith had the best of Canterbury's chances in the first half but they fell behind seven minutes into the second period when Purdy Miller scored from open play.

The game then swung on two decisions. One led to the penalty corner from which Jane Smith made it 2-0 on 56 minutes and the other saw Canterbury's Sarah Kerly denied a strong appeal for a stroke. It was Slough's first win in seven matches against their Kent rivals.

Maidstone had a mixed weekend, recording a win and a loss in the National South Division.

They enjoyed a 3-2 win over St Austell on Saturday, before going down 1-0 at home to Exeter on Sunday.

Cara Brogan gave them a half-time lead against St Austell. Linda Webb then equalised, before Kirsty Hotson put Maidstone back in front.

Helen Stubbs got St Austell's back level again, but their advantage only lasted two minutes before Brogan's second proved to be the winner.

Jess Webb scored the only goal of the game after 22 minutes in Maidstone's defeat to Exeter.
