Welling 1 Chelmsford City 3
Welling’s Blue Square South play-off hopes were dented in controversial circumstances by leaders Chelmsford City.
The game turned on an 80th minute penalty as referee’s assistant Rob Baker somehow kept his flag down when substitute Jason Hallett raced clear and was subsequently brought down by Graeme Andrews.
Referee Ian Bentley showed Andrews the red card and Chelmsford’s David Rainford tucked away the penalty to put his side 2-1 ahead.
Until then there had been little to separate the two sides, who boasted the best defensive records in the division.
Welling had taken a 54th-minute lead when on-loan Moses Ademola crossed for Charlie Sheringham to head them in front. The Wings missed a great chance to go 2-0 up two minutes later when Ryan Johnson was sent clear through, but his first touch let him down.
It proved costly as four minutes later the visitors were level when a near post corner was turned in from close range by Rainford.
Once Chelmsford were controversially ahead, the Wings were never going to get back into the game and Ricky Holmes forced in a third for Chelmsford six minutes from time.
Fisher Athletic 0 Bromley 2
Bromley stretched their unbeaten league run to five matches with an away win at Fisher, lifting the Lillywhites to 10th in the Blue Square South table.
Goals in either half from Nick McDonald and Ryan Hall were enough to grab the visitors all three points on a heavy pitch, which made passing football difficult.
McDonald’s strike came after concerted Bromley pressure and he was unlucky not to have a second, when his header was saved at the far post.
Despite being on top for most of the game, the win was only sealed a minute from time, when Hall latched onto a free kick from 25 yards out, rifling a left foot shot into the bottom corner.
Sadly, both sides were reduced to 10 men for the closing stages, when Bromley's Moses Swaibu saw red for an off the ball incident with a Fisher midfielder.
