Charlton v Barnsley
LLOYD SAM starts a three-match suspension on Saturday after the Football Association rejected Charlton’s appeal against his sending-off during Tuesday's brawl in the 2-1 win at Hull.
His absence puts paid to manager Alan Pardew's hopes of naming an unchanged side for a fifth consecutive Championship match when Barnsley visit The Valley on Saturday.
Pardew said: "I’m disappointed because we have no idea why the FA dismissed the appeal.
"Lloyd is very disappointed because he’s the least aggressive player in the team. He’s a waited a long time for a run of of games in the side and now it’s ended in a most unfortunate way."
Pardew confirmed that either Jerome Thomas or Darren Ambrose would replace Sam.
Last month, the manager publicly criticised Thomas after dropping him from the side. Now, he believes he is ready for a recall.
"He’s worked hard and done well in training. He’s a had a blip in his career, now I hope he’s over it."
Barnsley have never beaten Charlton at The Valley in 20 league meetings but Pardew insists he has the utmost respect for the Tykes, who have emerged as the Championship’s surprise package this season.
In midfielder and skipper Brian Howard they possess one of the most prolific goalscorers in the Championship.
He said: "We’re coming up against a side that have impressed me greatly. I’m expecting an open game."
