WELLING player-manager Neil Smith has named former Tottenham and Millwall defender Stuart Nethercott as his assistant.

The pair were together at Woking last season but know each other from their youth team days with Spurs.

Nethercott, a central defender with more than 300 league appearances to his name, is expected to take on more of a coaching than playing role.

Smith said: "Stuart is looking more at getting in on the coaching side of it. We're not looking to play him but he will register as a player and if we need him then we will use him.

"I know what sort of character he is, he really impressed me at Woking with his motivation skills and knowledge of the game. He will be an ideal coach for Welling."

Smith returned from holiday a day early in a bid to fast-track his preparations for the new season.

Welling have also confirmed that a West Ham XI will visit for a pre-season friendly on Wednesday, August 1.
