SMITH: "We've got to start being harder to beat and I want the players to show some character"

Eastbourne Borough v Welling

WELLING manager Neil Smith has called on his players to show a vast improvement ahead of the trip to joint-leaders Eastbourne on tonight.

The Wings suffered their fifth league defeat of the season to lowly Hayes & Yeading on Saturday, and Smith is demanding a response.

"The players have apologised for their performance on Saturday but I need them to let their football do the talking now," he said.

"It was virtually the same team that we played against Bath but they never got going against Hayes.

"We've got to start being harder to beat and I want the players to show some character - there was more spirit when we were 2-0 down at Lewes than when we played Hayes."

Smith was keeping any changes to his line-up or formation close to his chest but he will again be without midfielder Sam Keevill (knee).
