Wings boss expects two wins

PENNOCK: "I'd love to go into our final match with no worries"

Sutton United v Welling United

WELLING manager Adrian Pennock believes his side will guarantee their Conference South status at Sutton on Saturday.

The Wings let a 2-1 lead slip at Dorchester last weekend to ensure their Conference South survival bid goes to the last fortnight of the season but Pennock insisted that his team will beat the drop.

With Margate no longer able to catch the Wings, struggling Carshalton need to beat Cambridge and Eastbourne in their final matches without Welling picking up a win to send the Wings down.

But Pennock is keen that his side take themselves out of the equation with maximum points at Sutton.

He said: "If we can put on the same sort of performance that we did against Newport and, for long periods, at Dorchester then we will win the game. I’ve been in the game too long to rely on other results and I’d love to go into our final match against Lewes with no worries.

"I can see us winning both of our final matches. We were devastated after the Dorchester game but we have matched another one of the top teams."

One man key to Pennock’s plans will be midfielder Jamie Day, who scored a goal-of-the-season contender at Dorchester and is a front-runner to collect the player-of-the-year award at Park View Road.

"Jamie has been outstanding since I’ve been here and it was a fantastic goal," said Pennock. "He has been ill for the last two weeks but is still turning out for us and performing really well."

Lew Watts sits out the second match of a three-game suspension at Sutton, while Lee Spiller (ankle) should be fit to keep his place.

Pennock is likely to be reported to the FA for comments made to the referee after the defeat at Dorchester. His assistant, Phil Handford, completes a two-match touchline ban for a similar offence at Sutton.
