Tamworth 1 Welling United 1
DEPLETED Welling deservedly earned themselves another chance of causing an FA Trophy upset after holding Nationwide Conference Tamworth on Tuesday night.
The Wings had to come from a goal down to earn a second round draw - and they could have won the tie in stoppage time.
The match went ahead despite one area of the pitch appearing to be frozen.
Welling's Danny Kedwell was denied by Tamworth keeper Jose Veiga before the hosts took a 19th-minute lead.
Wings defender Mark Goodfellow stopped as the ball appeared to go out of play for a throw-in but, when the flag never came, Tamworth's Simon Heslop took full advantage and cut in from the left-wing before sending a right-foot curler beyond keeper Paul Hyde.
Welling responded well and equalised nine minutes later. Che Stadhart set up Steve Harper and his pull-back gave Kedwell time and space to pick his spot for his 21st goal of the season.
Tamworth were fortunate not to be reduced to 10 men on 67 minutes when Jake Edwards, already needlessly booked for impeding a Hyde clearance in the first half, went in late on Leon Solomon but escaped with a warning.
Tamworth then enjoyed a sustained spell of pressure and Hyde, playing after Jamie Turner was ruled out through injury, produced a stunning save to deny Edwards before Jon Stevenson saw his cross-shot come back off the post.
Welling nearly won the tie late on, substitute Andrew Sam was denied by Veiga, who then pulled off a similar stop at the feet of the industrious Harper.
The teams will do it all again in the replay at Gravesend & Northfleet's Stonebridge Road on Tuesday, January 30.
