Maidenhead 2 Welling United 1
WELLING’S relegation fears increased after defeat at lowly Maidenhead on Saturday.
An uneven pitch devoid of grass hardly helped a game which saw the ball in the air for the majority.
The home side took the lead on 17 minutes when Jamie Day’s mis-placed back pass was latched onto by Lawrence Yaku, who dispatched a low shot beyond Charlie Mitten.
It was 2-0 on 30 minutes when Ian Wiles’ untimely back pass put Mitten in trouble and his clearance only found Yaku who produced a stupendous right-foot volley from 25 yards.
Welling had the better of the second half and were awarded a penalty on 65 minutes when substitute Tommy Tyne was fouled by Rob Bixby.
Leading goalscorer Paul Booth confidently reduced the deficit from the spot.
However, Tyne twice missed opportunities to convert an equaliser and Welling’s misery was complete in stoppage time when skipper Lew Watts was red carded.
