Welling 0 Bishop’s Stortford 0
ADRIAN PENNOCK must wait at least another week for his first win as Welling manager after his side were held to a goalless draw against Bishop’s Stortford on Saturday.
It was arguably Wings’ best performance under their new boss but it was not enough to break down a resolute defence in a game of few chances.
Welling thought they had taken an early lead after six minutes when Chris Moore headed in a free kick, but celebrations were short-lived as the referee spotted a deliberate handball.
Jamie Day and Lew Watts had further chances as Welling pressed.
Bishop’s Stortford were reduced to trying to fashion something on the break but began to look the more likely to break the deadlock in the second half.
Tommy Tyne shot straight at the keeper after 65 minutes as Wings struggled to find a creative spark in the final third.
The game sprang to life in the last five minutes and both sides had great chances to steal the points.
Paul Booth somehow contrived to put the ball over the bar with the goal at his mercy after Tyne’s initial effort had been blocked and Tony Brown made himself a hero by clearing off the line in stoppage time.
