MUCH-improved Welling stopped the rot with a promising point at fellow Blue Square South strugglers Bognor on Saturday.

The Wings had the better of the contest and could count themselves unfortunate not to return home with maximum points.

Playing with the advanatage of a strong wind in the first half, Omari Coleman shot wide early on before assistant manager Stuart Nethercott, playing his first game of the season, connected weakly following Marlon Patterson's deep cross.

Orlando Smith fired wide from long range before Sam Keevil also missed the target after good set-up play by the industrious Coleman.

The clearest chance of the half came six minutes before the break but defender Chris Moore saw his near post header from Patterson's corner go agonizingly wide of the far post.

In the second half the Wings defender stoutly and restricted Bognor to long range attempts in the driving rain. And it was not until 12 minutes before time that the home side had their first shot on target.

The Wings, who were similarly wasteful in front of goal, were denied a penalty in stoppage time when Smith was pulled back, but the referee deemed that the first tug was outside the box and from the resulting free kick the visitors failed to forced the ball home.
